The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
