The total count of fatalities from the freight aircraft that ignited and crashed has now reached 13, per latest statements.
Mayor's Remarks
While en route to the Teamsters’ candlelight gathering, I learned of a 13th person that died as a result of the plane crash,” wrote the municipal leader in a social media post. “My prayers are with the relatives, companions and colleagues of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this collectively.”
Casualties Confirmed
An announcement from the company identified the pilots aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies go out to each employee who has been affected and everyone in our Louisville community – assisting you and making sure you obtain the support and aid you need is our main concern,” the organization’s communication read.
Investigation Findings
Government authorities revealed that the jet’s left wing burst into flames and an engine separated just after takeoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the plane to crash and explode into a blaze.
The safety agency announced it is probing the plane’s maintenance history, that was in the state for repairs several weeks before the crash.
Flight tracking records showed the plane was on the runway in that location from 3 September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this jet was located in the facility,” stated an investigator on later, without a specific period. “We will review all elements of maintenance that was completed, even the San Antonio time, straight to the time of the journey.”
Retrieval of Critical Components
The audio device and flight data recorder were retrieved, and the power plant was located on the runway.
The devices – referred to as data containers – were constructed to withstand accident forces and intense fire from fires, and they seemed to be in one piece when found amid the remains. Investigators intend to reviewing information from the black boxes.
The plane’s final data recordings showed an height of that level and a velocity of 210 mph before the accident.
Repair History
Based on aviation authority files from that date, a fracture on a structural piece within the tank area required fixes.
The company ST Engineering, which indicated it supplies aircraft servicing for the carrier’s MD-11 and runs a maintenance center in San Antonio, chose not to speak, but expressed it would work closely when relevant authorities reached out it.
Services Continue
Meanwhile, the facility services resumed that evening with its overnight or nighttime process, spokesperson Jim Mayer said. All three runways at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also reopened.
The sorting center in this location is the organization’s biggest. The hub engages over twenty thousand people in the area, manages numerous trips each day and processes in excess of four hundred thousand packages each hour.
Public Support
A candlelight vigil was conducted on the late afternoon of that date by the local worker’s group, which acts for staff at the Louisville airport, the firm’s primary air cargo hub.
The union chapter, which stands for staff, began the memorial with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the approximate hour of the accident before.
“This incident was so abrupt, so unforeseen,” the leader addressed the assembly of attendees. “No one had a opportunity to say goodbye to any one of those who we have said farewell to.”
