A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
